Thomas Hirth Elected Chair of the Executive Board at the Fraunhofer Future Foundation

Thomas Hirth is the new board chair of the Fraunhofer-Zukunftsstiftung (Fraunhofer Future Foundation). The foundation’s board of trustees appointed the distinguished innovation manager to this position effective July 1, 2025. He succeeds Hans-Jörg Bullinger.

Around the world, there is a lack of comprehensive medical care for people living in remote areas. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE have devised a solution for this in the PreCare project: a flexible, modular health platform that can be installed on the bed of a pickup truck. It is already in use in South Africa and Namibia. The team was presented with the Innovations for a Better Future award from the Fraunhofer-Zukunftsstiftung (Fraunhofer Future Foundation) for this development.

The Fraunhofer Future Foundation fully finances research stays for Ukrainian experts at Fraunhofer institutes in Germany for up to six months. Oleksandr Proskurin is the first visiting scientist to take part in the initiative.

The Fraunhofer-Zukunftsstiftung (Fraunhofer Future Foundation) is promoting scientific exchange between German and Ukrainian researchers to help repair war damage and prepare for rebuilding using climate and environmentally friendly technologies. To this end, the foundation is fully funding Ukrainian experts and their research activities with research stays of up to six months at Fraunhofer institutes in Germany. Oleksandr Proskurin, who has joined Fraunhofer IWS in Dresden, is the first visiting scientist from Ukraine to take part in the initiative.

The “ScienceForGood” crowdfunding competition 2022 of the Fraunhofer Future Foundation has launched with the motto: “Ready, steady, research!”. Six research teams will compete with projects that are close to their hearts. From October 6, 2022, to November 30, 2022, the scientists of the participating Fraunhofer institutes need to convince as many people as possible to back their idea and achieve their funding goal. The Fraunhofer Future Foundation supports this initiative with co-funding and prize money. It will be up to the general public to decide who receives the funding
